US Embassy / Berlin seeks hosts for Eastern German teachers

Deadline: ASAP; Guests would be hosted from October 7-14, 2006

The U.S. Embassy Berlin is inviting American teachers of German language to host an Eastern German teacher from September 30 - October 14, 2006.

The Eastern German teacher will participate in the Eastern German Teachers Visitor Program, a two-week professional program for secondary school teachers. It was established by Ambassador Coats in order to promote mutual understanding and provide German and American teachers with an opportunity to develop lasting contacts. The program is organzied by the U.S. Department of State and financed through donations from German and American companies. AATG helps us pairing the Eastern German teachers with American
host-teachers.

The Eastern German teachers will spend the first week in Washington, D.C. (September 30-October 7) pursuing a professional and cultural program designed to familiarize them with American culture, history, and the American political system. They will spend the second week (October 7-14) in an American city as the guests of American teachers of German language, and will hopefully gain the every-day life perspective.

American teachers will be asked to provide room and board from October 7-14, 2006, pick up/drop off the Eastern German teacher at the closest airport, take her/him to their schools, and include her/him in lessons plans.

Participants in the Eastern German Teachers Visitor Program were born and educated in the former GDR and work as teachers in Eastern German schools today. They have not been to the U.S. before.
